Anil Patel, FRCA, is a Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital, London, UK. He qualified from University College London, and trained in anaesthesia at Guy's Hospital, London. His interest include airway reconstruction, jet ventilation and the difficult airway

Abstract 

Airway emergencies, including any lesion that compromises the upper airway, can be life-threatening. Stridor, acute epiglottitis, an inhaled foreign body and a patient with bleeding tonsils require a prompt, methodical approach. Clear communication and cooperation between anaesthetist and surgeon is vital.
